feat(templates): check templates daily and serve live previews from Vercel Sandbox - #2518
Written by an AI agent on behalf of @HugoRCD, who shaped the solution. @HugoRCD has reviewed it.
Second of the stacked templates PRs, based on #2517. It adds the backend for the new templates page:
A daily check that proves each template installs, builds and runs.
Live previews that restore the checked build in a few seconds.
Nothing on the site calls it yet; #2519 uses the results, and #2542 boots the snapshots as live previews. An admin page to run and follow checks will come in a later PR.
The point is the signal people care about most when they pick a template: does it still work with today's Nuxt? A listing can't say that from metadata, so the check builds every template like create nuxt would.
A parent run creates one Chromium sandbox and checks up to 8 templates at a time. Each one is a child run, so it has its own log, retries and failure scope in Vercel Observability.
Each child checks its template in a clean Vercel Sandbox, phase by phase:
Install: clone the repository and install from its own lockfile with its own package manager.
Build:nuxt build can exit 0 halfway through prerendering without writing any assets, so a build only counts once Nitro prints its final line or writes .output/server/index.mjs.
Start: for templates that run without secrets, start the server, check that every CSS and JS file loads, and wait for the app to mount in Chromium. The file checks run on the workflow worker, not in the sandbox, so they only follow redirects within the template's own server and skip files hosted elsewhere. A template can't make the worker request anything else.
Snapshot: snapshot the passing ones. Only the latest passing snapshot is kept, and the one it replaces is deleted.
Install and build run detached and are polled, because they can take longer than a workflow step may run. While they run, the end of their log is reported.
Each snapshot also expires after 3 days. A passing check replaces it every day, so the expiry only removes the ones nothing replaces: removed or failing templates, lost reports, and runs from local dev or preview deployments. A preview only restores a snapshot whose check passed less than 3 days minus an hour ago, so it never picks one that is about to expire.
Sandboxes are named after what they do, so they're easy to find in the Vercel dashboard: templates-check-<slug>-<id>, templates-check-browser-<id> and templates-preview-<slug>-<id>. Snapshots can't be named; the dashboard shows the sandbox each one came from.
Results live in two new tables, through /api/internal/templates/*:
template_checks: one row per template with its state, phase timings, result, Nuxt version, snapshot and log.
template_check_runs: one row per run.
A failing check keeps the last passing snapshot and passedAt. So the template "now fails", and its live preview stays off until it passes again. On failure, the log ends with the error lines and the last 120 lines of output.
Runs can overlap. A template that another run is already checking is skipped. Every report is checked against the run that queued the row, so a run that lost the row stops instead of overwriting it.
Runs start from:
the daily cron at 04:00 UTC (/api/cron/templates-check, protected by CRON_SECRET);
pnpm templates:check, which supports --payload '{"slugs":["docus"]}' or '{"failing":true}'.
This replaces scripts/check-templates.mjs. Results used to live in sandbox tags; they now live in the database.
Live previews
POST /api/templates/preview restores a template's last passing snapshot in a new sandbox and starts its server, in about 6s. It's open to every visitor, without signing in:
BotID keeps bots out, since each preview runs a VM.
One preview per visitor: each sandbox is tagged with the visitor's id, their GitHub id or an anonymous id kept in their session. Starting a preview stops their other ones, and a preview can only be stopped from the session that started it.
50 at a time: a third table, template_previews, holds one slot per visitor. A preview takes its slot in a single database statement before its sandbox is created, and that statement refuses new visitors once 50 slots are taken. So requests sent in parallel can't go past the cap. When the same visitor starts two at once, the older start sees it lost its slot once its sandbox exists, and stops it.
10 minutes: each sandbox stops by itself after that. Its slot is freed when it stops, fails or its visitor leaves, and expires a minute after the sandbox would have stopped anyway.
Before the build, runnable templates get one client plugin, server/utils/templates/preview-bridge.ts. It syncs the color mode from nuxt.com, and tells the parent window whether the app mounted or crashed.
Evidence
pnpm templates:check --payload '{"slugs":["docus","canvas"]}' against the local dev server, with real Vercel Sandboxes:
Docus passed in 188s, with timed phases and a snapshot.
Canvas failed at build. Its stored log ends with the real cause:
==> Errors
Zod toJSONSchema error for schema: ZodObject Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'def')
Starting a second run with Docus while the first was still checking it returned skipped: ['docus'].
Two Docus previews started in a row from the same anonymous session, against the dev server and real sandboxes:
blue-itchy-deer-Ajn9wh stopped owner-tag-set ← first preview, stopped when the second started
gray-male-sheep-xRyFji running owner-tag-set
no session: { "stopped": false } ← DELETE without the visitor's cookie
owner: { "stopped": true } ← DELETE from the same session
A full run on a preview deployment. I started it on #2542's deployment through the cron endpoint, with CRON_SECRET. Preview deployments share one database, so this PR's deployment reads the same results:
"live" counts the passing templates that run without secrets, so they get a snapshot for live previews.
BotID on the preview deployment: a headless browser got Forbidden when it clicked Try It Live (#2542), while a regular browser started the preview.
The preview cap. This is the same statement reservePreview runs, sent by 60 visitors at once to a scratch SQLite database:
60 visitors at once: 50 got a slot, 50 slots taken
a visitor with a slot starts again: 'preview-again', slots taken: 50
a new visitor while all 50 are taken: ''
On the dev server, a real preview took a slot, and clicking Stop freed it (template_previews went from 1 row to 0).
The file checks can't leave the sandbox. I ran fetchFromSandbox and smokeTest, copied from this branch's workflow file, against a local "template" whose HTML references //<internal host>/steal.css and whose /hop.js redirects to another origin. I also ran them against a page that redirects to that internal host:
template: failed: 1/2 assets failed to load: | 302 /hop.js
redirecting page: passed
requests that reached the internal server: none
The redirecting page passes this check without being followed; the browser check, which runs in a sandbox, then decides.
pnpm typecheck and pnpm vitest run test/unit (480 tests) pass, and ESLint passes on the changed files. test/unit/template-checks.spec.ts covers how reports update a row: refused reports, phase timings, and keeping or replacing the snapshot.
Before deploying: set CRON_SECRET in production and apply migrations 0010_template_checks and 0011_template_previews.
ELI5
Every night, nuxt.com now installs and starts each template on a fresh computer in the cloud, the way someone trying it would. If a template still works, a frozen copy of it is saved so visitors can try it live in seconds. If it broke, the site knows when and why.
The change adds shared template models and utilities, SQLite-backed check tracking, and workflows that install, build, and validate templates in Vercel Sandboxes. It adds scheduled and manual check entry points, a cached health endpoint, and owner-scoped live preview endpoints.
A browser setup failure can leave an entire daily template run unchecked, and long-running checks can lose their browser before validation. Chat resume can also leave a prompt unanswered. Resolve these failures before merging.

When the served output contains 200.html, a missing .css, .js, or .mjs URL reaches the /200.html candidate in server/utils/templates/static-server.ts and returns status 200 with text/html. Both checks and previews can use this server. The check only tests res.status, so it accepts the HTML fallback as a loaded asset. The browser can then reject the response as an invalid stylesheet or script.

Retry the resume when chat status leaves resuming.
The resume watcher runs once. Its resumeDone guard blocks any later run. resumeChatSession also returns early when chat.status is submitted. This PR maps Eve's resuming state to submitted. If the watcher first runs while Eve is still catching up, a chat with an unanswered trailing user message can stay unanswered after the status returns to idle. Nothing re-runs the resume.
Add a retry trigger for the case where the early return is taken while the status is busy. Do not set resumeDone until the resume either sends the prompt or finds nothing to send. Alternatively, include chat.status in the watcher sources and gate the retry on the first run having completed. Choose one approach, and make sure a completed resume cannot send the same prompt twice.

/api/cron/templates-check, protected byCRON_SECRET);pnpm templates:check, which supports--payload '{"slugs":["docus"]}'or'{"failing":true}'.This replaces
scripts/check-templates.mjs. Results used to live in sandbox tags; they now live in the database.Live previews
POST /api/templates/previewrestores a template's last passing snapshot in a new sandbox and starts its server, in about 6s. It's open to every visitor, without signing in:template_previews, holds one slot per visitor. A preview takes its slot in a single database statement before its sandbox is created, and that statement refuses new visitors once 50 slots are taken. So requests sent in parallel can't go past the cap. When the same visitor starts two at once, the older start sees it lost its slot once its sandbox exists, and stops it.Before the build, runnable templates get one client plugin,
server/utils/templates/preview-bridge.ts. It syncs the color mode from nuxt.com, and tells the parent window whether the app mounted or crashed.Evidence

A full run on a preview deployment. I started it on #2542's deployment through the cron endpoint, with
CRON_SECRET. Preview deployments share one database, so this PR's deployment reads the same results:"live" counts the passing templates that run without secrets, so they get a snapshot for live previews.
BotID on the preview deployment: a headless browser got

fetchFromSandboxandsmokeTest, copied from this branch's workflow file, against a local "template" whose HTML references//<internal host>/steal.cssand whose/hop.jsredirects to another origin. I also ran them against a page that redirects to that internal host:The redirecting page passes this check without being followed; the browser check, which runs in a sandbox, then decides.

Every night, nuxt.com now installs and starts each template on a fresh computer in the cloud, the way someone trying it would. If a template still works, a frozen copy of it is saved so visitors can try it live in seconds. If it broke, the site knows when and why.
