feat(templates): start and follow template checks from the admin MCP and Nuxi - #2568
The team can now start template checks and read their results from the admin MCP. Nuxi gets the same two tools in admin sessions, through its existing admin MCP connection, so there is one implementation for Cursor, Claude and Nuxi.
What changes
start-template-checks starts the same run as the daily cron, for some templates (slugs) or the ones that fail (failing). It reuses startTemplateChecks, so templates another run is already checking are skipped. It returns the run id right away: a check takes 1 to 15 minutes.
template-check-status returns each template's last check (state, current phase, result, failing step, Nuxt version, live snapshot) and the latest runs. includeLog adds the end of each log, to explain a failure.
Both tools are admin-only (isMcpAdmin), like the other admin tools. Nuxi only lists them in ALLOWED_TOOLS of admin-mcp.ts, which non-admin sessions can't call.
Runs started this way are recorded with trigger: 'mcp'. The enum only exists in TypeScript, so there is no migration.
The cron and the new tool share templateCheckBaseURL(event): in production, the check always reports to https://nuxt.com, never to a host taken from request headers.
Each check runs a 4 vCPU sandbox, so the tool descriptions and the Nuxi instructions ask for slugs or failing rather than every template, unless someone asks for all of them.
Evidence
A local dev server on this branch, called over the admin MCP with the admin token. A real check of content-wind on Vercel Sandbox.
Lint, vue-tsc and the unit tests (510) pass. I didn't test the tools from a Nuxi session: Nuxi reaches them through the same admin MCP endpoint called above.
ELI5
nuxt.com checks every template once a day to see if it still installs, builds and runs. Until now, only the daily timer or a terminal command could start a check. Now the Nuxt team can ask Nuxi, or their editor's AI, to re-check a template and tell them why it fails.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The admin MCP interface now supports starting template checks and retrieving template and run status. The start tool accepts slug and failing-template options. The status tool supports slug, failure, running-state, and log filters. Template check runs now accept the mcp trigger, and the cron handler uses the shared base URL helper.
The new admin tools report live-preview availability consistently with the preview lookup. No merge-blocking risk was found.
