Summary

  • Skip allocation of fused intermediates through a generic ggml allocation interface.
  • Fuse CUDA INT8 gate/up projections with SwiGLU and reuse graph storage for packed SwiGLU outputs.
  • Eliminate unnecessary CUDA scratch and CuTe attention buffers.
  • Preserve external storage identities during workspace measurement to avoid false overlap detection and repeated workspace rebuilds.

Values represent diffusion-model compute buffers, excluding weights, text encoder buffers, and VAE buffers.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added fused split-branch INT8 SwiGLU execution for compatible inputs, with fallback to the existing path when requirements aren’t met.
    • Improved CUDA attention handling for eligible FP16 inputs and fresh F32 outputs, reducing intermediate conversions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved workspace sizing and overlap protection for fresh outputs, views, and externally backed tensors across CUDA operations.
    • Updated fusion and allocation guidance in the documentation.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The changes update CUDA workspace measurement and output scratch selection, add direct input and output paths for eligible CuTe attention cases, and add CUTLASS split INT8 GEMM fusion for compatible SwiGLU graphs. The extension documentation describes these behaviors and their constraints.

Changes: CUDA allocation and fusion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Allocation tracking and skipped tensors
docs/ggml_extensions.md, src/core/compute_workspace.cpp, ggml
The documentation describes skipped fused intermediates and allocation-cache invalidation. Workspace measurement now tracks external storage identities and associates external views with their root buffer. The ggml submodule reference is updated.
Output scratch selection
docs/ggml_extensions.md, src/core/cuda/convrot.cu, src/core/cuda/i8_gated_residual.cu, src/core/cuda/rms_affine.cu, src/core/cuda/rope.cu
These CUDA paths now select output scratch based on destination allocation and overlap conditions. The documentation describes fresh-output handling and retained overlap protection for existing outputs and views.
CuTe attention direct paths
docs/ggml_extensions.md, src/core/cuda/cute_attention.cu
Eligible aligned contiguous FP16 key/value inputs can bypass conversion buffers. Eligible fresh F32 destinations receive output from the attention kernel, with the documented FP16 rounding before scaling. Other destinations retain existing postprocessing paths.
CUTLASS split SwiGLU fusion
docs/ggml_extensions.md, src/core/cuda/i8_gemm.cu, src/core/cuda/i8_gemm.h, src/core/cuda/int8.cu
The CUDA INT8 GEMM code adds split gate/up weights and scales, and int8.cu adds matching, preparation, execution, workspace handling, and registration for compatible SwiGLU graphs. The documentation lists fusion constraints and fallback behavior.

Explanation

The title "perf: reduce fused compute buffers" matches the main objective of PR #2290. The changeset cuts diffusion-model compute-buffer usage through skipped fused-intermediate allocation, CUDA INT8 SwiGLU fusion, removal of scratch and CuTe attention buffers, and workspace measurement changes. The title is short, uses a conventional prefix, and names the primary effect. It does not name the mechanisms, but that detail is not required.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It includes a Summary section that lists the four main changes and gives a compute-buffer comparison table. Related Issue / Discussion is filled in as N/A. Additional Information contains the benchmark table. The Checklist is checked. The description covers the required information. It does not explain the verification method beyond the table, such as the commands or models used to measure buffers, which would strengthen the Additional Information section. This gap does not block the check.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 32 functions across 9 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
