The current infinite presets are limited to a few specific cases. This is partially limited by how Sofie currently only track one piece per layer.
(except inside the part there is an undocumented case of an On-End infinite being interrupted by a short piece resuming after the piece ends, while the UI shows it as inactive until the next part as what the documentation would have you believe)
Virtual pieces either behave completely transparent or end infinites. There is no concept of a temporary override.
Infinites cannot be scoped to all of Sofie's content sopes.
New Behavior
This PR now enables sofie to track multiple pieces on the same layer. The pieces are flattened before the timeline objects are resolved.
This new mechanic also allowed us to introduce a new type of virtual piece, the shadow-virtual, this allows holes to be punched in the timeline, while having any piece that was previously playing to resume.
Additionally, the mechanisms of an infinite piece has been exposed, allowing blueprint developers to define custom behavior based on their needs. (for example a playhead following infinite that doesn't stop when it hits another piece.)
Its now also possible to scope infinites more precisely.

Walkthrough
The change introduces structured piece lifespans with scope, presence, and shadow behavior. Playout resolution now handles piece continuation, shadowing, and resumed timeline spans. Blueprint processing, adapters, UI lifespan labels, and related tests now use the updated lifespan model.

Summary
Lifespan contracts and blueprint normalization packages/shared-lib/src/core/model/Rundown.ts, packages/blueprints-integration/src/documents/piece.ts, packages/corelib/src/playout/pieceLifespan.ts, packages/job-worker/src/blueprints/postProcess.ts, packages/job-worker/src/blueprints/context/lib.ts
The public model adds structured lifespan definitions and the virtualMode property. Corelib maps legacy values and applies defaults. Blueprint processing normalizes lifespans and marks shadow pieces virtual.
Overlap, shadow, and resumed-piece timing packages/corelib/src/playout/processAndPrune.ts, packages/corelib/src/playout/__tests__/processAndPrune.test.ts
Piece timing tracks active and shadowed pieces by lifespan scope. Shadow and clear virtual pieces can cut underlying pieces, with resumed slices created when applicable.
Continuation lookup and playout wiring packages/corelib/src/playout/infinites.ts, packages/corelib/src/playout/stateCacheResolver.ts, packages/job-worker/src/playout/infinites.ts, packages/job-worker/src/playout/model/*, packages/job-worker/src/playout/__tests__/infinitesE2E.test.ts
Corelib replays planned and playing pieces to resolve continuations. The job worker fetches candidate pieces, supplies playback position and context, and replaces continued instances.
Adapters use legacy presets where required and parse definitions for duration, infinite-instance, and virtual-stop decisions. Related fixtures and tests use the updated lifespan values.
UI lifespan display and compatibility updates packages/webui/src/client/lib/ui/*, packages/webui/src/client/ui/*, packages/webui/public/locales/{nb,nn,sv}/translations.json, packages/sofie-core/src/publications/piecesUI/rundownContentObserver.ts
UI lifespan labels and selectors use scopes and shared text formatting. Locale files add lifespan and resume labels. Related mock data and tests use defaults or legacy presets.

Explanation
The title "feat: infinites rework" names the main change. The changeset reworks infinite piece handling in playout: it replaces the lifespan enum selection and playhead-tracking logic with replay-based continuation, adds lifespan scope and shadow behavior, and adds the shadow virtual piece mode. The title is short and specific, though it uses the general term "rework" and does not name the shadow virtual or lifespan changes.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within #1802 scope. Core changes implement lifespan composition, shadow behavior, continuation, layer resolution, and legacy compatibility. Job-worker changes integrate the new playout behavior. Web UI, localization, and UI tests expose the new lifespan and resume states. Test and mock updates support the implementation. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated. Excluded snapshot files are not used as evidence of scope.

Explanation
The description states the PR implements the infinites rework for Sofie (issue #1802). It covers multi-piece tracking per layer, the new shadow-virtual piece type, exposed infinite mechanisms, wider lifespan scoping, and the legacy-persist compatibility value. These points match the changeset, which adds the PieceLifespan model, the shadow virtual mode, the replay-based infinites logic, and the related test and UI updates. The description is specific enough to pass. The checklist items for author testing and documentation remain unchecked, but the check covers relevance only.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR implements the main #1802 behavior. It adds structured lifespan definitions, shadow virtual pieces, multi-piece layer resolution, resumed slices, continued infinite lookup, and related unit and end-to-end tests. It also preserves legacy preset parsing through PieceLifespan.from() and LEGACY_PIECE_LIFESPAN_PRESETS. However, #1802 requires retaining existing preset strings without breaking changes. The reviewed changes rename the public PieceLifespan enum to LegacyPieceLifespan and change IBlueprintPieceGeneric.lifespan to a new union type. The summary identifies this as a breaking API change. Existing blueprint consumers that import PieceLifespan therefore require migration.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Return the definition object from toJSON(), not a JSON string.
PieceLifespan implements IPieceLifespan, so the type system allows a PieceLifespan instance in any lifespan field. JSON.stringify (and EJSON/DDP, which uses it) calls toJSON() and inserts its return value as-is. The current return value is a string, so the field is stored as "{\"scope\":...}". On read, the constructor treats any string as a legacy preset. normalizePreset then throws Unknown legacy piece lifespan preset. The method comment says the method is for MongoDB / DDP serialization, so it must return a plain object.

Preserve legacy lifespan values in persisted queries.
PieceLifespan.from normalizes legacy strings only after a record is loaded. The changed Mongo queries filter on 'lifespan.scope', so existing records with values such as 'segment-end' or 'rundown-end' are excluded before normalization. The same issue affects rundownContentObserver, DirectorScreen, PresenterScreen, and withResolvedSegment.
Add a migration for all persisted lifespan fields, or add legacy-string alternatives to every affected query. The alternatives must include the legacy values allowed by each fragment: segment-change/segment-end for segment scope, rundown-change/rundown-end for rundown scope, and showstyle-end for showstyle scope.
